Philip and Marieke are a Dutch couple from Amsterdam. Philip is creative director at his own advertising agency and filmmaker. Marieke is a renowned photographer. Besides their everyday jobs they make one documentary project a year, together. In these projects they try to project a more nuanced image of the way we look at each other and the world around us.
In recent years they traveled to different places we hear a lot about in the news. In Afghanistan they asked people about their favourite places of the city Kabul and portrayed them there. In Lebanon they asked Syrian refugees questions on behalf of their Facebook friends and posted the filmed answers back on their friends timeline.
The couple’s most recent project is called The Island of all Together. For this project Philip and Marieke traveled to the Greek island Lesvos. Here they invited Syrian refugees and European tourists to meet each other and talk about life while sitting on a bench overlooking the sea. The conversations were filmed and edited into a short documentary. The project got worldwide exposure.
During TedXYouth Zurich Philip and Marieke will be talking about their focus on everyday life in contrast to the extremes you see in the media. By doing this they try to make the ordinary extraordinary.
